Many factors affect our skin type. While some of us are battling dryness and irritation, others are dealing with excess oil production, greasy skin, oily areas, and the resulting clogged pores.

What Causes Oily Skin? 

Under each of our skin pores are glands that produce natural oils called sebum. Before the alarm bells start screaming at the sound of ‘sebum’, it’s important to remember that sebum itself is vital in keeping our skin healthy. It reduces water loss from the skin's surface to encourage healthier, smoother, younger-looking skin. Where sebum becomes a challenge, is when it goes into overdrive and results in oily skin caused by the increased oil production.

Excess sebum is most often caused by hormones, genetics, age and environmental stressors. Each one of these, or a combination of, can tell the sebaceous gland to produce more natural oils than what your skin actually needs. This causes a build-up of oil that can clog pores with dirt and dead skin cells, particularly around the forehead, cheeks, and chin. 

So, while sebum is usually a very good thing for our skin, it's the cause of excess sebum that can trigger increased oil production.
